Feb Signing Day brings New Faces and Directions for Colorado Football
By TrevMon • Issue #21 • View online
On Feb 2, the Buffs added 5 players, bringing the total in the 22 cycle to 29 new players, comprised of 22 from high school, 2 from Juco, and 5 portal transfers. Because of the NCAA rule that allows programs to replace up to 7 portal transfers, the Buffs could add 3 more new players for a total of 32 this cycle. The Buffs current roster is at the 85 max of scholarship players allowed, so any new additions will need equal parts attrition.
The new coaches also met the press and pubic for the first time live on signing day.

New Recruits address some gaps
Players Added on Feb 2:
  • RB, Ramon Jefferson, (5-10, 215) transfer from Sam Houston. 2nd team FCS all-american (91.4 pff)
  • RB, Anthony Hankerson (5-9, 190) St. Thomas Aquinas, FL, 3 star, grey-shirt
  • C, Van Wells, (6-2, 290) Houston Texas, 3 star
  • OT, Alex Harkey, (6-6, 300) transfer from Tyler JC, 3 years eligibility
  • S, Jeremy Mack, (6-0, 190) transfer from East Mississippi JC
Needs going forward:
The Buffs desperately need to improve performance in the trenches on both sides of the ball. I believe that the three remaining spots we have for the 22 cycle, the Buffs should look to bring in transfers with experience at Offensive Tackle, and Defensive End.
Offensive Line Rankings for Buffs (Football Outsiders):
  • Opportunity Rate (did the line do it’s job): Buffs Rank 129/130
  • Sack Rate: Buffs Rank 123/130;
  • Power Success Rate: Buffs Rank 93/130
Defensive Line Metrics for Buffs (Football Outsiders):
  • Opportunity Rate: Buffs rank 69/130
  • Sack Rate: Buffs rank 127/130
  • Power Success Rate: Buffs rank 113/130
I think the staff will likely look to address needs at Tackle, Defensive Line then Safety with the remaining 3 scholarships. The Buffs have lost several starters at skill positions (WR, RB, DB) but I believe these positions have relatively more depth on the roster and incoming freshman have better chance of early impact at these positions than in the trenches. The staff will likely use the Spring to re-assess their needs, and look to the post Spring wave of portal additions to address gaps. Probably some transfers who are ready day 1 to compete at OL/DL and maybe S depth charts. Here is the lates post signing day depth chart.

Quick Takes from the New Hires
At the Feb 2 presser, most, if not all of the coaches mentioned they have had spoken with their players in their rooms, they need Spring term to evaluate and go from there. They answered questions about their backgrounds, and coaching styles..The snipets below are some of the key impressions.
Mike Sanford, Offensive Coordinator
  • Offense will not be running the ball 70% of the time…Tailored to CU personal, balanced, and characterized by physicality…Connection with Coach Turley (Stanford) and Brian Cabral (Brian coached with Mike’s Dad)
Clay Patterson, Tight Ends
  • More dynamic use of TE in mold of Kelce, Kettles. Spent his career in spread systems in contrast to Sanford (pro-style)..connection with Mike from Minnesota staff (see Adam’s article on Clay)
Phil McGeoghan, Wide Receivers
  • Believes he and Dorrel can attract and develop WRs with the best of them in college football. Phil has been busy with offers 16 offers to top talent 4 stars (14) and 5 stars (2)..Connection with Dorrell where he was coached by Dorrell in Denver Broncos (See Adam’s article on Phil)
Kyle De Vann, Offensive Line
  • Almost became substitute teacher before career in Arena League, then NFL. His approach emphasizes technique and physicality (see Adam’s article on Kyle)
Rod Chance, Defensive Backs
  • “I think I’m a relationships coach first and foremost. Kids don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”..connections to Dorell and Maxie from their time at Vandy
Vic So'oto, Defensive Line
  • Believes in Coach Wilson’s philosophy of pass rush pressure; his philosophy is a violent approach on defensive line…connected with Coach Wilson from his Days at Virginia when Wilson was with Phily
With these hirings, Karl Dorrell has assembled his best staff. They seem to be well aligned on vision and values. See the full press conference below.
