CU Buffs Football: Takeaways from First Spring Scrimmage

CU Buffs Football: Takeaways from First Spring Scrimmage
By TrevMon • Issue #23 • View online
The Defense seemed a step ahead of the offense, they held the running game. But, the Offense ran basic formations.
RB Alex Fontenot, WR Chase Penry; WR Maurice Bell; WR Grant Page, WR Ty Robinson, OL Edgar Amaya; OL Gerad Christian-Lichtenhan; TE Caleb Fauria; TE Brady Russel; S Isiah Lewis; S Oakie Salave'a; DL Jeremiah Doss, DL Tyas Martin; CB Jason Oliver; CB Nigel Bethel; OLB Joshka Gustav
You can listen to these notes on the podcast, or check out the CU Spring Report for a deeper dive.

Takeaways
  • The QB room looked better at first site (note Casey Roddick, who is looking fitter than ever, emergency Center)
  • Young corners held their own, Nikko Reed had a pass break-up, early enrollee CB Joshua Wiggins broke up a few passes
  • Good look inside of the Buffs base defense in 4-3, with Ham, Perry, Barnes as the 4-3 backers
  • DL is top tier unit (anchored by Sami, Lang, Rodman)
  • Edge looked sharp, Guy Thomas, Alvin Williams, Jamar Montgomery made some plays with hand in the dirt (1 Edge will line up with hand in dirt in 4-3)
  • Starting OL looks promising, depth is an issue - only one scholarship Guard behind the ones, (Jackson Anderson) was banged up during the scrimmage; only one healthy scholarship Tackle behind the ones ( Travis Gray)
  • Tight Ends are a factor - Erik Olson had a nice catch and run for about 15 yards. Nice to see Austin Smith with a few downfield targets
Portal Priorities
The Buffs can add up to 4 more transfers from the portal. I think they will get by fine at RB, WR, although those positions are short-handed right now.
Priorities:
  • Offensive Line: I went to the scrimmage hoping to see a good showing from back-ups Amaya, Lichtenhan, and Jackson. However, Amaya and Lichtenhan did not suit up and Jackson was banged up during the scrimmage. Buffs should add Tackle and a versatile OL with experience at both T/G (2)
  • Safety: walk-ons Anthony Lyle and converted QB Jordon Woolverton were running with the ones and twos. Isaiah Lewis and Trevor Woods are the likely starters. Buffs should use one spot on a safety for quality depth (1)
  • ILB or Corner: take best athlete available, depth needed in middle behind Perry (1)
