  • Belgian marketing platform Sortlist acquired The Briefers, opens Madrid office

  • Carlos Domingo, former director of Telefonica I+D, announced SPiCE VC, a fund that aims to disrupt traditional venture capital models using the blockchain and thus providing early liquidity to LPs
  • Gate93 is a new and small VC firm to invest in Spanish companies that want to launch in the US
  • Infrastructure and energy giant Acciona announced an acceleration program for startups

  • El Español profiled math edtech startup Smartick. The bootstrapped company expects to reach €5 million in revenue this year and a profit of €1 million
  • Wallapop is now valued at €615 million, according to filings from investor Vostok New Ventures
  • Hawkers opened its own first retail store, in Madrid
  • Glovo expanded its services to Palma de Mallorca

  • Fashion and retail giant Inditex is organising a hackathon during South Summit. To our knowledge, this is the first time they’ve done something similar externaly
  • The CEOs of Telefonica and Santander said Europe need tech champions and ask Europe to establish a levelled playing field to compete with US companies
Big (foreign) company news 🏦
  • Just Eat reached sales of €18 million in 2016 in Spain. The company posted a loss of more than €10 million
  • Travel giant Expedia had sales of €10 million in Spain last year. Not a lot comparing how big the Spanish travel market is
  • El Español interviewed Raimundo Sala, PayPal’s managing director in Spain
  • Uber now has 50 Tesla cars driving around Madrid. The company had sales of €1.4 million last year in the country

  • More negotiations between Uber, Cabify and Spain’s main and local governments to regulate its activity and the purchase of VTC licenses
