Sri Lanka Is Underwater 😓

A year ago after I had just moved back to Sri Lanka, devastating floods rocked the island nation as a result of higher than normal rain. It is literally déjà vu because Sri Lanka is in the same situation yet again.

I was in Jakarta last week getting reports from people back home about really heavy rains that have swooped in shortly after I had left. This was rather ironic because I was expecting Jakarta to be pissing rain but the city was rather bone dry for most of my visit.
The rains kept coming and wouldn’t let up over the span of several days. Red alerts started to go up because this was reminiscent of what happened exactly a year ago with floods that lead to over 220 deaths and the displacement of over 600,000 people.
Fortunately, this year’s onslaught wasn’t as deadly as last year’s but it has still claimed 21 lives so far and affected over 150,000 people
For the most part, I am safe and relatively dry as most people in the capital are, but the less developed areas of the island are not as lucky.

Things are looking up and the sun is starting to peak out from the clouds but my sadness turns to frustration because it seems like Sri Lanka never prepares for disaster situations like this even though the island is at high risk of it year in and year out.
I’m going to let the water settle and see where I can lend a hand with relief efforts in the coming days but I’m leaving for the United States on Thursday so it might have to wait until I get back in a couple of weeks.

My best,
Nico
