Apple is getting ready to launch Augmented Reality glasses with rOS
When Apple released ARKit, everyone knew it was a stepping stone to something much bigger. Details on these plans have now been leaked and it looks like something bigger is indeed being built.
According to Bloomberg, the planned AR headset will have its own display, a new chip, and a specially-designed operating system, currently referred to internally as “rOS” or “reality operating system.”
If the new report is correct, Apple is working to an ambitious schedule, aiming to have its AR device ready by 2019, with the possibility of shipping it to consumers in 2020.
There’s been a lot of questions as to whether Apple’s Augmented Reality initiatives are just a stepping stone to Virtual Reality. It now doesn’t look like that’s the case.
Apple are going all-in with Augmented Reality.

Google says it will have Augmented Reality ready on hundreds of millions of devices next year
Google expects “hundreds of millions” of Android devices to have augmented reality (AR) capabilities by the end of next year.
Google executive Amit Singh said that monetization opportunities would arise as AR use becomes a “daily habit”.
Google released the ARCore developers kit earlier this year which competes with Apple’s ARKit.

Harry Potter is coming to Augmented Reality from the makers of Pokemon Go
The app is now official, but the details are still scarce, with the launch timeframe of just sometime next year, but it sounds like there will be significant influence from the Niantic game Ingress, which allows players to roam the real world collecting power-ups, defending locations and exploring their environment.
The mechanics of Ingress would actually translate pretty well to the fictional Harry Potter universe, and seems almost ready-made for a fantasy spell casting coat of paint to replace its science-fiction special forces veneer. Also, like Pokémon Go, it could benefit from the location database built up by Ingress originally (and expanded by the Pokémon title) to incorporate real-world locations into the in-game experience.
