Hi, I’m Newley Purnell – welcome to the latest issue of Newley’s Notes, a newsletter in which I share my Wall Street Journal stories, posts from by blog, and various links about technology and life.

What I Wrote in The WSJ
SoftBank Set to Invest Over $1.5 Billion in India’s Paytm – a story with my colleague Mayumi Negishi. Paytm, which makes a popular mobile wallet here, is about to get a bunch of cash from the Japanese tech behemoth.
What I Wrote at Newley.com
+ Trip Report: Varanasi, India’s Holiest City – Some pics from a trip back in Feb. Have been meaning to share these for a while.
5 Must-Reads in Tech this Week
1. “Can Facebook Fix Its Own Worst Bug?” That’s the title of an in-depth New York Times Magazine story by Farhad Manjoo on Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg, the platform’s influence, and the challenge of fake news.
2. Amazon is making big waves in the world of literary translations. The Seattle Times’s Ángel González takes a look at AmazonCrossing, which is on the hunt for foreign tales
3. Whither e-books? Speaking of Amazon, e-book sales in the U.S. sank 18.7% over the first nine months of last year, while paperback sales jumped 7.5% and hardcover sales were up 4.1%, according to the Association of American Publishers. But that doesn’t mean e-books are dying, exactly. A look at longer-term data shows sales of digital books have still grown a striking 165% since 2010. Maybe they’re just plateauing now.
4. Artificial intelligence will one day rule the world world, right? Think again, says Kevin Kelly in a thought provoking piece called “The AI Cargo Cult: The Myth of a Superhuman AI.”
5. Meet the startups trying to shake up the world of money transfers. At Fast Company, Ben Schiller profiles the likes of Circle, Transferwise, Abra, WorldRemit.
1 Fun Thing
Wedding llamas: they totally exist. Folks getting married in (where else?) the Portland, Oregon area can hire a company called Mtn Peaks Therapy Llamas & Alpacas (!) to bring the creatures, dressed up perhaps in a nice bow tie and top hat, to your reception. So Instagrammable.
What’d I miss? Just hit reply to send me links, rants, raves, juicy news scoops and anything else.
And would do me a solid? Consider sharing Newley’s Notes on Facebook or Twitter (sharing icons below), or via email with your similarly savvy friends.
Thanks for reading.
Love,
Newley
