I hope you are off to a great start in 2022.
Towards the end of last year, I set out to start coaching a band from Naples, Italy: ‘O ROM
. Like them, I love both Neapolitan and Roma cultures
, and I found interesting the challenge of bringing it all in one project.
Directed by Carmine Guarracino and Carmine D'Aniello, ‘O ROM pays a heartfelt homage to people who find community among strangers and joy in the face of adversity. It all started when they met a bunch of gypsy artists on the streets of their hometown and decided to play together. The free spirit of both cultures became the tread tiding the artistic project together.
Over the years, 'O ROM have released various singles and two albums
(Napulitan Gipsy Power
, 2019/ Vacanze Romanes
, 2012), played memorable venues and festivals in Italy, collaborated with both gypsy and “gadjo” artists, and taken part in numerous projects (Capitan Capitone e I Fratelli della Costa, Daniele Sepe
, Terroni Uniti, Agusevi Djambo Orkestra
e Jovica Jovic
, the docufilm Scampia Felix
and the movie La Santa Piccola
Their repertoire draws on various influences and musical genres, from Django Reinhardt’s swing jazz to Neapolitan popular music, from Eastern European music to Italian rap.
You can watch their video clips or listen to their albums, and see for yourself if this is something you would like to bring to your venue or festival or play on your radio program.
