Last week, we were pleased to announce Motive and Apollo Global Management Inc.
have led a $225 million investment in CAIS
, a leading alternative investment platform for financial advisors who seek improved access to, and education about, alternative investment funds and products. This week, Blythe Masters
(Founding Partner at Motive Partners) spoke with Matt Brown
(CEO of CAIS) on the exciting road ahead.
Matt Brown: It is with tremendous excitement that I share this transformational news for CAIS with our recent announcement of a strategic investment of $225 million from world renowned institutions, Motive Partners, Apollo Global Management and Franklin Templeton, giving CAIS a valuation that exceeds $1 billion. I’m joined here today by Blythe Masters, a Founding Partner at Motive Partners. Motive Partners is a specialist private equity firm focused on creating long-term value in financial technology companies. Welcome Blythe!
Blythe Masters: Thank you. And congratulations, Matt.
Matt Brown: Thank you so much. So, Blythe, how does CAIS fit into Motive’s investment thesis and what made this the right time to invest in CAIS?
It’s a great question and I think the answer is really a compelling one. We’re a very thematically driven investment firm. We identify big themes and we seek to find companies that will drive those themes and benefit from them.
We think that CAIS, in many respects, lies at the confluence of a number of themes and trends that are driving opportunity in financial technology – the ongoing digitization and electronification of asset classes; the development of platform businesses that enable others to operate in a much more streamlined and efficient manner using digital technology; the structural growth in private capital markets and alternatives; and – last but most certainly not least – the evolution and opening of architectures in the wealth space that are enabling investors and their advisors to get access to an array of products that were traditionally within the realm of the institutional investor. Every single one of those is relevant to the story of CAIS.
So Matt, an important question for you is to tell the audience what this capital raise means for CAIS and what it is going to enable. How are you going to take advantage of it?
Matt Brown: You know, this is a really pivotal moment, and not just for CAIS, but for the entire industry. For many years we’ve built a strong foundation at the company level, and we’re quite ready now to absorb a substantial amount of capital, to deploy it efficiently against our growth plans and, ultimately, to drive real value. Overlaying that of course, is the bigger thesis, which is the market itself – the tides are turning in terms of financial advisors and asset managers wanting to engage and transact with each other at scale.
Blythe Masters: Yes and I think it’s really a testament to the manner in which you’ve built your business. CAIS is now in a position where you can leverage digital technology to allow asset managers, investors and their advisors to refocus their efforts away from the manual, complex and inefficient processes that are needed to facilitate investment and to actually unleash the power of enabling those stakeholders to spend their time on value-added activity. It’s really a powerful story, and your new investors and partners are looking forward to taking CAIS to the next level.
