CDC Issues Guidance on Treating Drug-Resistant Typhoid Fever
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Friday released recommendations for treating Extensively Drug-Resistant Salmonella Typhi, a systemic illness transmitted through contaminated food and water and person-to-person contact. Following a large outbreak in Pakistan in 2016, CDC has received at least 71 reports of XDR Typhi infection in the United States, including at least nine cases since November 2019 in patients who had not traveled internationally. XDR Typhi strains are resistant to antibiotics generally recommended to treat typhoid fever, including ampicillin, ceftriaxone, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reminding healthcare professionals seeing patients from the areas affected by recent winter storms to maintain a high index of suspicion for carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. Other people who may be exposed to the same CO source may need to be identified and evaluated.

CDC Releases Guidance on Vaccinating Homebound Individuals
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has released guidance on COVID-19 vaccination planning, training, and administration for health care providers who vaccinate homebound persons. This includes, for example, people who need help or medical equipment to leave their home, typically do not leave their home, or whose health could get worse if they do. CDC also has updated its vaccine storage and handling toolkit, which includes information related to home use.
