Matt Sheehan's Newsletter
And we’re back! Welcome to the 39th edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
There’s been radio silence the last couple weeks as I traveled around China for research on Hollywood and the Chinese film industry. I got to speak with actors, writers, directors and producers of everything from imperial court dramas to an internet-only movie about a Chinese rapper with a stutter. It was fascinating and fun, and I’ll have some writing on it in the coming months.
Welcome to a big batch of new readers this week. The newsletter is broken down into sections (Tech, Hollywood, China/town, etc.), where I provide links and my own commentary in bold below. At the top I give three must-reads for the week, and at the very bottom a “Culture Corner” – a snatch of China-related culture that I dig. If the email gets cut off for length, simply click “View entire message” at the bottom.
Note for Gmail users: if this email ends up in your ‘Promotions’ tab, just drag it into your inbox and click ‘Yes’ to ‘Do this for future messages?’
Alright, top reads from the last couple of weeks:

The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I’m a fellow at The Paulson Institute and write for the think tank’s site MacroPolo. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for The Huffington Post and The WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.
