Welcome to the 28th edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
California Governor Jerry Brown’s whirlwind China tour dominated the Chinafornia headlines this week, with a high-profile meeting with Xi Jinping as the cherry on top. Plenty going down in the tech and Hollywood space this week, so dive in.

The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for The Huffington Post and The WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.

Jerry Brown in China
Xi Jinping and Jerry Brown of California Meet to Discuss Climate Change - The New York Times
The trip produced a flurry of agreements and news, which I’ll break down here:
- Clean tech and emissions trading agreement w/ China’s Minister of Technology – this may be the highest profile takeaway, but reports still very sparse on details
- Brown rides a high-speed train and discusses Chinese investment and engineering on California’s prospective line.
- Plea for Chinese battery technology for California electric vehicles. Interesting that BYD’s California electric bus factory isn’t mentioned. Brown announced its creation on his last China trip, before PR debacle.
- Linking cap-and-trade markets (Reuters) was something Brown raised before his departure, but no word on whether this got traction in China. This piece in Nature argues that’s a good thing, as linkages can disrupt already precarious pricing of emissions.
