Welcome to the 31st edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
There’s a strong trifecta of good storylines this week in tech, Hollywood, and Chinese students at US universities. The hubub over the Dalai Lama’s commencement speech at UCSD – and the way Chinese students cloaked their objections in language of ‘inclusion’ – provides a strange mental tweak to other speaker controversies on US campuses.
Also, for those interested in the joy+agony of learning Chinese, I just made an appearance on a new podcast: Journey to Chinese Fluency. Taking on that language was probably the hardest and most rewarding thing I’ve ever done, and I love analyzing the learning process in terms of tactics and mindset.
Alright, top stories of the week:
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for The Huffington Post and The WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.
