Welcome to the 26th edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
Yesterday I got to attend the relaunch of Sinovation Ventures Bay Area office, with speeches and panels on AI by Andrew Ng and Sinovation founder/ex-Google China head Kai-Fu Lee. Both delivered some great insights on AI development/deployment in Silicon Valley and China.
On the AI race, Kai-Fu said US leads in fundamental research, but China doing better at deployment and commercialization. Asked where self-driving cars would be deployed first, Kai-Fu said it depended on whether the key obstacle was technology (in which case, US wins) or gov cooperation (in which case China wins). Ng seemed to agree, saying it would require public-private partnerships to really work.
Those are two folks with the deepest knowledge and most balanced judgments in evaluating Silicon Valley and Chinese tech trends.
Now, onto this week’s top reads:
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for The Huffington Post and The WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.
