Welcome to the 24th edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
This week we welcome a big batch of new readers thanks to the kind recommendation of Bill Bishop on the excellent Sinica Podcast. For new subscribers: each week I’ll be linking to and commenting on the top news connecting China and California across tech, film, real estate, immigrant communities and much more. At the bottom I include one Culture Corner: a nugget of China-related culture that I dig.
Gmail users: if this email ends up in your “promotions” folder, simply drag it to “primary” and click “yes” to the “Do this for future messages?”
Onto the newsletter: This week I have a new piece contributing to a US-China series on RealClearWorld: “Welcome to Chinafornia: the Future of U.S.-China Relations”. This piece is the clearest distillation I’ve done of the Chinafornia thesis: California’s unique role in bringing US-China relations down from great power politics and into our schools, neighborhoods, and businesses. That transformation creates new opportunities for much-needed funding, but also multiplies points of friction. Channeling these new infusions of Chinese money and talent toward benefiting ordinary Americans is the key task going forward.
This week’s other Chinafornia must-reads:
1. Apple’s China Problem - Stratechery by Ben Thompson
2. Christine Lu’s Tweet Storm on EB-5 - interesting take after the Kushner controversy. I give my commentary in the Real Estate section below.
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for the Huffington Post and WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.
