Welcome to the fifth edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
This week yours truly was quoted in a nice Chinafornia column printed in The San Francisco Chronicle and Sacramento Bee. The column, “California Should Bridge Rift Threatening U.S. China Relations,” was by Joe Mathews, a journalist with some fascinating Chinafornia family history of his own.
Below is an excerpt, and here is a link to the non-paywalled version at SacBee:
California’s role in this difficult period should be to tell the story of its own deep ties to China and to seek out new areas of productive cooperation, argues Matt Sheehan, author of the forthcoming book “Chinafornia: Working with Chinese Investors, Immigrants and Ideas on U.S. Soil.” “I think of California as a living laboratory for a more practical, productive version of U.S.-China relations,” Sheehan says.
The Christmas slumber slowed news a bit, but there’s plenty popping off in the Hollywood space: the most bizarre China-Hollywood deal of the year was nixed, The Great Wall plodded on to middling reviews but decent receipts, and the Chinese box office is looking at its slowest growth in over a decade
Also, make sure to read Isaac Stone Fish’s piece on Trump’s fanatically anti-China trade czar – a truly frightening and, I would argue, xenophobic dude. Getting Chinafornia right – making sure it benefits working/middle-class Americans – and telling that story will be more important than ever.
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as The Huffington Post’s first-ever China correspondent. I’m now back in my native California consulting on China-related projects and writing a book on Chinafornia.
