Matt Sheehan's Newsletter
Welcome to the seventh edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
This week’s must-reads:
1. Obituary for Tyrus Wong, the Chinese-American artist who helped create “Bambi” with inspiration from Song Dynasty landscape paintings. He entered Angel Island as a ‘paper son’ and had to be twice as impressive as white colleagues just to get put on projects. His is an inspiring and heartbreaking story, one that I can’t recommend highly enough.
2. Profile of Trump’s commerce secretary’s love/hate relationship with China, including its art and state-owned enterprises. The guy is a dead ringer for the Raymond Tusk character of House of Cards…
A little personal stuff: I did coastal bookends on newspaper quotes over the last two weeks. After making it into a Chinafornia piece in the SF Chronicle, this week I got my first quote in the New York Times, this time for commenting on a crazy fight I recorded at the Beijing airport in 2013.
I wrote up the story of the fight in “Anatomy of a Chinese Airport Rumble.” I think it’s a pretty damn fun read, and the video is worth the price of admission. Enjoy!
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as The Huffington Post’s first-ever China correspondent. I’m now back in my native California consulting on China-related projects and writing a book on Chinafornia.
