Welcome to the ninth edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
This week’s must-read pieces:
1. How Beijing is bracing for a trade war, and notes from Commerce nominee Wilbur Ross’ confirmation hearing indicating a more targeted approach than across-the-board tariffs. (Wall Street Journal)
2. Sharp Eddie Huang piece in the New York Times on Steve Harvey and the emasculation of Asian-American men.
3. A Department of Commerce study showing the controversial investment-for-greencard program known as EB-5 generated ~175,000 American jobs in 2012 and 2013. The study is very detailed, but I pull out some takeaways in the Investment section below.
This week’s Culture Corner at the bottom of the email is a shout-out to a painter that I see as the Norman Rockwell of China, a man who did beautiful portraits of street life in China almost one hundred years ago.
Enjoy, and as always please feel free to share with friends and get in touch with me.
