Welcome to the eighth edition of The Chinafornia Newsletter, your weekly digest of news connecting the Golden State and the Middle Kingdom.
We’ve got a bunch of new readers this week thanks to a shout-out in the indispensable Sinocism Newsletter, so I’ll give a quick review of the structure here.
Each week’s newsletter will cover a few key areas connecting the US and China: tech, investment, Hollywood, education, real estate, Chinatowns and relations between DC and Beijing. At the bottom of each edition I’ll include two bonuses: the Golden Oldie and Culture Corner. The Golden Oldie will be a great Chinafornia article/video from days past, and Culture Corner will be a little slice of Chinese culture that I just dig.
*** Note: if the newsletter is ending up in your Gmail “Promotions” tab, just drag it to your inbox and click “Yes” to “Do this for future messages?” ***
This week’s must-reads:
1. Trump son-in-law and senior White House adviser Jared Kushner has been in talks with one of China’s largest and shadiest conglomerates about a joint venture. (New York Times)
2. How Chinese real estate investment is reshaping the LA skyline, and fueling a boom in local construction jobs in the process. (LA Times)
3. A fun comic-book feature about a 1931 sociology study featuring American racial attitudes towards Chinese people. (Stanford Magazine)
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as The Huffington Post’s first-ever China correspondent. I’m now back in my native California consulting on China-related projects and writing a book on Chinafornia.
