Matt Sheehan's Newsletter
Hi Chinafornia readers,
Taking a quick break from a blitz of edits to the Chinafornia manuscript to drop you all a note saying that Kai-Fu Lee’s new book – AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley and the New World Order – made its debut today. I worked very closely with Kai-Fu over the past year to make this book happen: dissecting and debating the technology with him, interviewing dozens of AI startups, and researching the economic and social impacts of the technology.
Between Chinafornia, Kai-Fu’s project, and my work at the Paulson Institute, the past year has been by far the most intense and rewarding stretch of work in my career to date. I’m really proud to see one of those finished product hitting shelves today.
Pictures and a some more background below:

In that process, I learned so much about artificial intelligence and the myriad ways it will be shaping our world in the coming decades. Those insights have reoriented my work and career interests, pushing me to focus on shaping AI’s role in the China-US relationship. We need to find ways to avoid a dangerous arms race on AI, while harnessing this transformative technology for the public good and mitigating the new risks that will arise. I’m looking forward to continuing that work in the Chinafornia space and beyond.
You can order the book on Amazon here, or even better, go out and support a local bookstore by buying it there.

Alright, back to work on the Chinafornia manuscript. I know I’ve promised a few times that this newsletter will be back on a regular schedule, but each time a new mountain of work has made that impossible. I’ll hold off on further promises for now – have an intense month of writing, traveling and speaking ahead. But just know that I’m deep in the midst of edits for Chinafornia right now, and am loving the process of making the book better for its future readers, including you, I hope.
More soon,
The Chinafornia Newsletter is created by me, Matt Sheehan. I’m a fellow at The Paulson Institute and write for the think tank’s site MacroPolo. I spent over five years in mainland China, including two as the first-ever China correspondent for The Huffington Post and The WorldPost. I’m now back in my native California where I’m consulting on market entry and communications for China-related projects, and writing a book on Chinafornia.
