Mastering JS in 2022: Focus on Browser Tools
By Mastering JS Weekly • Issue #80 • View online
Mastering JS is built around the thesis that devs solve problems by Googling. Along those lines, we’ve found ourselves spending a lot of time searching for quick solutions to problems like converting decimal to binary, or converting HTML to Pug.
We don’t want to install npm packages or CLI problems to solve these sorts of problems, for two reasons. Primarily, we don’t want to have to install software or read docs. Installing a new package is a PITA. We’re feeling that pain right now because we’re writing this email while waiting to install Brew so we can install Ruby so we can install the Shopify CLI. Web UI’s are ideally more intuitive, don’t require installing anything, and get you from problem to solution faster.

Today's equivalent: "waiting for installing even though this should be a static binary"

The other reason is we need to solve these problems in an adhoc one-off way, rather than an automated way. We’re not searching for an HTML to Pug converter so we can make that part of a Webpack build. We’re searching for a converter because we have some HTML code that we need to switch to Pug once.
Focus on Browser Tools
In 2022, we’re going to be building a lot more in-browser converters and similar tools. We’re expecting this to grow our traffic substantially - there are a lot of high volume keywords in this space. Clearly a lot of developers are running into similar problems: what if you just want to convert JSON to YAML without installing an npm package?
