Hi friends,
I’m trying to be a better fish. And well, that’s just a silly way of saying that I listened to David Foster Wallace’s 2005 commencement speech and enjoyed this parable:
There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes “What the hell is water?”
I’m learning about thinking (and thinking about learning, haha). There’s a lot going on around us these days. Perhaps you have time to take a moment to take five deep breaths and check in with yourself right now. If you’re interested in some of the stuff I’m spending time with (cognitive biases, some light philosophy, and how we talk about racism), you can see those in my new post (linked here). If you’re taking time/space from the noise, please excuse this interruption.
It is with privilege that I am glad to be safe and well, and hope that you are, too. I’ve been have fun with the various FaceTimes, Zooms, and Google Meets lately, and hope you’re getting to enjoy the sunshine!

All my love,
Mara

P.S. I got tested for Coronavirus (not the antibody test, the normal test) and I don’t have it, so that’s a plus. Seattleites, our city is doing free testing.
