Find Piece of Mind Taking One Thing at a Time
By lucianohgo • Issue #22 • View online

Hey there you! Welcome back to this 22nd issue. Today’s issue is on a topic I find critical, but still struggle with: Ruthless Prioritization. So often we say yes to too many things and I’ve always had this lingering feeling that if I didn’t people would think less of me. I love new initiatives, I love creating stuff, my head is always a little too much in the future, so this is a personal weak spot for me. With time, I’ve come to learn that this is a trap. Starting things and not following through, setting too many goals, trying to do too much at once is a straight route to failure and frustration.
I’ve taken the time to share these ideas and learnings with my organization and they already sparked action in different teams. I suggest you do the same 🤘🏾
As always, if you like the content, make sure to share it on Twitter and LinkedIn and help me spread this message and get more feedback. It really helps a lot 😊

Why are some teams constantly firefighting?

4 common causes

1) Infra: unreliable, insecure, slow

2) Execs: asking for new / different / contradictory things

3) Interpersonal: petty drama between people & teams

4) Habits: managers conditioned to think firefighting is the job

The very act of "solving" one thing expands the universe of possible for the customer.

Our product changes, and is part of, the environment (technology/culture/climate).

Success invites instability and new challenges

Weekly, I write and explore topics on Building a Career in Tech, Leadership, and Creating awesome User Experiences. I'm a Senior Software Engineering Manager at QuintoAndar a (very) fast-growing Startup in Brazil. I was a partner in a Software House in the past, worked at AWS, and learned a lot from great leaders and peers along the way. I tap on that experience to decide topics, research them weekly and compile what I've learned so you can avoid making some of the mistakes that I did.
