I ended up with a quiet night this past month and I rented Valerian and the City of Thousand Planets, the latest film from Luc Besson, which is based on a famed French graphic novel. I loved Besson’s work on the Fifth Element, which was a seminal work in my early pre-adulthood and a movie I still love to watch today. Valerian is clearly a gorgeous film with amazing locations, aliens, and starships that give the whole movie an otherworldly feel. The movie really falls down with the story though. The characters are flat, and don’t get me invested in the film outcome. I would still recommend seeing the movie for the visuals alone though I think Besson would have been better served to direct and leave the writing/plotting to another person.
