April saw two highlights in our Forum event series. Most recently, we had the honour and pleasure to enjoy a lively discussion with Professor Markovits of Yale Law School about the issues in his his book “The Meritocracy Trap” together with distinguished Law Professors, other professionals and Adrian Wooldridge of The Economist who is about to publish his book “The Aristocracy of Talent” in June this year. Watch this space. Corporate retail investors were the topic of our book presentation on 20th April 2021. Dr. Diane Bugeja of Camillieri Preziosi, Malta, introduced her book on this subject, published by Hart Publishing, joined by a distinguished panel.

Our May programme includes Seminar No. 5 of our 5-piece “New Voices in investor protection” Series as part of out “Forum: financial regulation and civil liability.” Seminar 5 presents Dr. Lin Lin’s new book Venture Capital Law in China (Cambridge University Press, 2021) on 27th May 2021, generously supported by CUP. Participants also get a 30 % discount on the price of this book. We are very grateful to our panel of distinguished experts in the field of international financial services law and venture capital law for their commitment to join author Dr. Lin and our Forum members to discuss this topical issue. The seminar will be more than a straight book launch but will also draw a connection to the recent EU regulation on foreign direct investment (FDI) which might affect VC investors and developers. Our academic forum is therefore also joined by two practitioners from DLA Pipers law firm who are researching in this field.

Our Call for Papers is out for our annual conference on “The Future of the Commercial Contract in Scholarship and Law reform.” Bookings can also already be made at an “Early Bird” discount until 18th July 2021.

Also now booking: our conference series “Contract Law in Common Law Countries - a study in divergence” organised jointly by LCF and Jindal Global Law School in India. The three online conferences in June, September, and December 2021. They gather a range of internationally renowned speakers and discussants who will be discussing issues on the formation (June) and the performance (September) of an agreement as well as and remedies and dispute settlement (December). Professor Ettore Lombardi, member of the Forum on financial regulation and civil liability, published a monograph on the phenomenon of “copyleft” - intellectual property law in the digital age published by ESI. (In Italian).

Our Forum on financial regulation and civil liability started in December 2020 and consists of a standing panel of subject experts. These include LCF director and founder Professor Mads Andenas QC of the University of Oslo, Professor Olha Cherednychenko of the University of Groningen’s Centre for European Financial Services Law (GCEFSL) which she directs, Professor Guido Alpa of the University La Sapienza in Rome, Professor Jan H. Dalhuisen of King’s College London, Professor Ettore Lombardi of the University of Florence, Dr. Antonio Marcacci, Senior Compliance Officer of a large bank, Dr. Federico DellaNegra, senior consultant at the ECB, Dr. Marnix Wallinga of Stibbe attorneys in Amsterdam and Dr. Maren Heidemann of LCF, IALS and the CCLS at Queen Mary, University of London. The forum seminars feature further experts and authors discussing their new titles and contributions to new developments in international financial services law.
