Hello !
🐦 Last week on Twitter : LVMH‘s cautious take regarding the metaverse, an acute look on Activision’s acquisition by Microsoft, the possible end of couple’s fighting at Ikea, the next meatballs at Ikea, and a name predestined to do evil
  • Meta and Spotify, same fights ?
  • Back to the future of sounds
  • It’s hard to maintain New Year’s resolutions
  • Cultural meta-trends
🤵‍♀️ And of course the lady of the week.
Don’t hesitate to reply to this email and let me know what you liked or didn’t like, it’s always and still a work-in-progress !
The big one
🤯 This week, I was wavering between 2 topics for this Big One, and I asked LinkedIn for help… Christian‘s suggestion? To mix both topics. I took the challenge
📰 Last week, then, two pieces of news dominated the #Tech news: the GAFAM results (should we say MAGMA, now, or not?) and Spotify’s setbacks around the Joe Rogan controversy. But indeed, the topics are intertwined around this quote: “with great power comes great responsibility”.
By the way, I learned that it actually comes from Voltaire: “Great responsibility is the inseparable sequel to great power.”
🤑 So GAFAM have even more money. Even though Meta disappointed, Alphabet, Microsoft, Amazon and Apple (should we actually say AMAMA?) are exceeding investors’ expectations, including for some their best quarters ever. I won’t go over the numbers again, they make your head spin.
😩 Things aren’t going well in the best of worlds, though. Google has 3 lawsuits pending, Amazon is accused of facilitating suicides, Apple has to deal with the semi-conductors‘ shortage… 🇫🇷 But the worst remains the setbacks of Facebook, sorry, Meta, remarkably detailed in this paper 🇫🇷 by Frédéric.
🥺 The end of an era? No doubt. The end of the duopoly between Google and Facebook. The end of Meta’s crypto Diem, Meta focusing on its eponymous product. The Facebook product has become the cash cow, the legacy product that will fund the new horizons, the child to kill like Microsoft agreed to kill Windows to refocus on the cloud, with a little help from Apple and it ATT by the way.
🧐 Even if we can question the hypocrisy of Apple on the subject, we have to admit that the public, staff as well as users, are changing their behavior in the face of the refusal of platforms to moderate what happens on their airwaves (can we say airwaves? I choose to say airwaves). Spotify is taking the brunt of this and even dedicated 15 minutes to the subject of the Joe Rogan controversy in its call to analysts (and a dedicated employee town hall, a full transcript of which is available). Elk remains rather proud of himself.
💰 One can also blame Apple, Alphabet and Amazon for Spotify’s troubles, forced to look to podcasts and original content for the revenue that music, now a commodity, doesn’t allow to generate, much to the chagrin of employees embarrassed by the situation. Moreover, the artists themselves do not earn much, those who chose to leave the plateform as well as the others.
😬 The advice we can give Spotify to get out of this bad situation is to be more transparent about the rules, provide reliable sources of information to fight infox, and apply the same rules to all content. #OhWait. Isn’t that what we were saying about Facebook not long ago?
🤨 A parallel between the 2 companies that I couldn’t find in any article? Meta is the last of the dinosaurs GAFAM to still have its founder in charge.

Why "How and Why" ?
Keeping abreast of everything that is published today is exhausting. There is too much to read, and as we’re too scared to not read (FOMI, anyone ?), we spend a lot of our waking - and sometimes not working - hours trying to stay afloat.
As I do it anyway (both out of need for my clients and out of sheer curiosity for, well, everything), why not share with you what I’ve thought useful ? On top of my posts on Twitter and LinkedIn, I’ll share with you every week what has inspired me, surprised me, what I found insightful, or sometimes just funny.
Curator is the new creator. I didn’t come up with that, Marie did, and I have utter faith in her trendspotting.
