Facebook faces the music at SXSW
Facebook making the news. There are fewer brands ruling the streets of SXSW in Austin, but more interesting houses and an unbelievable number of panels. The first one I sat in on, the one that may stick with me for a while, was Facebook and Publishers, which looked at Facebook’s changing relationship with media and the news. Kudos to Facebook for sending Alex Hardiman to explain the changing Newsfeed and how much responsibility the company has for spreading fake news. Important stuff as we head into a whole bunch of crucial mid-term elections.

Let’s go virtual. I’ve been working with Capital One at SXSW and yesterday I hosted a fascinating panel on the future of online credit card purchases. Capital One already has a mobile-based chatbot service called ENO, but now, under that brand, they’re adding Virtual Credit Card Numbers. Put simply, the system uses a browser plug-in to generate unique credit card numbers for each retailer. Now, if that retailer suffers a breach, only that number is impacted and you can use the system to shut that one number down. More details on the feature and a photo of my panel after the link.

Locked out. If you can’t unlock your phone, take a breather and wait a few minutes before you try again. Or, you could keep trying over and over again until it’s locked forever. That’s more or less what a toddler reportedly did to her mom’s iPhone.

To the beat of his own drum. I found this guy and his awesome robot right in the middle of Austin’s iconic 6th Street. The robot was loud and, I think, proud.

Flip-flop. A burger-flipping robot in California is a victim of its own success. It couldn’t handle the volume of people interested in getting burgers made by an automaton, and now its offline while they try to make it as fast as SpongeBob SquarePants.

It’s still early days in the newsletter experiment and I’d love to know what you like, what you don’t and if I’m crowding your inbox. Let me know on Twitter or Facebook with the hashtag #LanceList.
