Going West…World, Sad Giraffe, Rumor du Jour

SXSW Day 2
Okay, SXSW, the interactive, music and film fest hasn’t actually started yet. Companies were putting the finishing touches on their experiential “Houses” scattered around downtown Austin and the big activity for most people was lining up to get their badges. I got mine and now I’m raring to go for the official Day 1 of the Interactive Conference.
Shook. Right now the big news and biggest thing at SXSW is an insane, 3-day-only park outside Austin that recreates some parts of the HBO series Westworld experience. I took in a press preview on Thursday, got a hat, and was entertained and more than a little creeped out. The show returns on April 22. Is this how you get the hype-machine going?

No, Geoffrey! Bad news if you plan on being a Toys R Us kid anytime soon. CNBC was reporting that the retailer, which recently shuttered almost 200 stores in January, may be liquidating its assets. It’s all still rumor, but I just don’t see how Toys R Us can compete with the Amazon juggernaut.

Nevermind. The only thing better than a smartphone rumor story is one that kills an existing rumor, which begs the question, “Did the rumor ever exist in the first place?” Samsung is surely producing a Galaxy Note 9, the followup to the excellent, stylus-sporting Note 8. The big rumor that the next one would incorporate a fingerprint reader underneath the screen, which, obviously, Samsung never confirmed, is now apparently a dead rumor. Got it?

Coming Up
Back at SXSW I’m about to host a Capital One panel on the future of online shopping with your precious credit card. After that, I’ll go live on Twitter with a tour of the Capital One House (Antone’s) in Austin. Keep your eyes on my Twitter so you don’t miss a thing.
