A price to pay. The European Union has been chasing after Silicon Valley and what it considers the raft of anti-competitive practices that come out of the companies based there. One of its favorite targets, Google, has been in the bullseye since 2015 and now it faces a $5B fine for controlling the software that ships with virtually all Android Phones. Since Android is the dominant mobile platform in the world, this is a big deal. But even with that expected fine, what will change? My guess is Android phones will still ship with Chrome, Google Search and Google Play for years to come.

A big W for Walmart. Giant brick and mortar and online retailer Walmart is cementing its long-standing relationship with Microsoft. Together, they hope to use Microsoft’s cloud and AI services to create the future of shopping or, at least, compete better with Amazon, which has actually created the future of shopping in a thing called Amazon Go. The big question is how quickly Microsoft’s technology can transform this largely old-school business.

Pocket doctor. Isn’t it annoying how every time you switch doctors or healthcare providers you have to enter your entire health history on a new set of, usually, paper forms? At the very least, you should leave your own healthcare producer with your own health stats in hand. But most of us don’t or can’t. That’s changing, though. We now have the right to access our own health records and we can, depending on provider, put them right on our iPhone. That seems empowering.

Stellar. Jupiter doesn’t want to brag, but it has a lot of moons. 10 more were recently discovered by Astronomers at Carnegie Institution for Science. None of them are very big. With most around 1 or 2 miles in diameter, they’re mere specs compared to the Earth’s more formidable satellite. Still, it’s fun to think about all those tiny orbs circling a distant planet, vying for attention, especially when one is totally doing its own thing.

P.S. Time to say sorry.
