Your next phone: The flood of new tech gadgets slows down in the summer. It’s the pregnant pause before an exciting fall of new products, especially smart phones. We fill that gap with endless rumors about the next handsets from all the major companies. Motorola will get a head start on the competition with a flagship launch in early August. Most believe Motorola will launch the OnePower and maybe another Z3. Samsung will hold an event a week later where most expect to see S10 devices, including this rumored S10+ that might include a whopping five cameras. Apple should announce its new handsets the following month. One prevailing rumor is a more affordable iPhone X (that trims away some key features).

Drone Times. DJI may have canceled its July 18 mystery drone event, but that hasn’t stopped the gadget hounds from digging up some photos of what may be the next DJI Mavic drone. The rumored Mavic 2 might have a swappable camera and 360-degree awareness to help you avoid backing it up into houses, trees and statues. No word on when or if DJI plans to reschedule the event.

In the dark. For those of you desperate to email in the dark…I mean, Dark Mode, you’re in luck, at least if you’re an Outlook user. Microsoft is thisclose to releasing Dark Mode for Outlook. It’s a mode that essentially swaps the white background for black and makes the text white. I have no idea why people care about this so much. I grew up using old computers and CRTs where the screen was black except for the green (and later white) text. It was not that wonderful.

Rescue. If you’re like me, then you’ve been keeping a close eye on developments in Thailand, where a dozen boys and their soccer coach were trapped in a deep cave. Some have been rescued, but the rains are coming and it’s a race against time to save them. One brave diver already lost his life. 8,000 miles away, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Boring company teams have built an unusual submersible to try and ferry the boys out, one at a time. Right now, it’s not clear if the tiny sub will arrive in time to help, especially as the rescue efforts gather steam and more boys emerge from the tunnel. All-in-all it’s been an incredible effort.
