AT&T and Time Warner; ZTE’s tough times; Poor Mars Rover Opportunity

Merged. A federal judge gave the big thumbs-up to AT&T’s $85B takeover of Time Warner and everything underneath it (HBO, CNN, Warner Brothers, DC Comics, TBS, TNT, the Cartoon Network and more) handing the Department of Justice, which opposed the deal, a loss that could mean it won’t have much luck blocking future, similar deals. The decision comes almost two years after the deal was first announced and months after President Trump voiced his displeasure about it. What does it mean for you CNN news junkies and Game of Thrones fans? Not much, at least in the short term. The question is whether a distribution network like AT&T could end up prioritizing their content stable over, say, that of Netflix, which does not have a similar service provider parent. If Comcast’s ownership of NBC/Universal is any guide, we may not have much to worry about, at least in the short-term.

ZT Ouch. ZTE may get a chance to operate in the U.S. again, but not before paying a huge $1.4B fine and, somehow, recovering from the market smack down it took after news of the hefty fine. In case you missed it, ZTE is a Chinese handset and technology company that’s been making some inroads in the U.S., but apparently broke a bunch of rules by dealing with North Korea and Iran. Personally, I’d be shocked if ZTE ever operates in the U.S. again.

Blackout. Poor Mars Rover Opportunity. It’s suffering through an intense dust storm on the red planet that’s making it nearly impossible to charge. Two days ago, NASA engineer and Bobak Ferdowsi (yes, the hip guy with the Mohawk),  explained on Twitter that while Opportunity usually pulls in 700W a day, it’s down to just 100W a day. It’s unclear if the rover, which has been hard at work on Mars for 14+ years, will be operational when the storm finally subsides. Crossing my fingers.

Gadgets for your Dad. I don’t know about you, but Father’s Day just seems to come out of nowhere. Here I am thinking about summer and suddenly there’s a holiday to worry about. I feel like no one is really prepared for this like they are Mother’s Day. If you’re one of the millions still trying to find a last-minute gift for pops, watch my Live with Kelly and Ryan segment for some good gadget ideas.

London calling. My fascination with artificial intelligence is taking me to London where I’m about to host a fascinating round table on AI with my partners Avanade and Blue Prism. We’ll be discussing AI in the workplace and how to help businesses and CIOs implement AI technologies and policies that complement and enhance their workforce. The future is automation, but it’s not human replacement. Watch my social feeds for updates on the big chat in the heart of London.
