Amazon Buds; Google’s Defunct AI Ethics Group; Snapchat’s Big Plans; Musk Sort of Wins

Amazon hears you. Apple’s AirPods are an unalloyed success for the tech giant and now others in the space are looking to replicate that audio triumph. Samsung made a bet with its Galaxy Buds this year, Google has its Pixel Buds, and now Amazon is apparently set to take on the AirPods with its own in-ear Bluetooth headphones. Even if Amazon builds its popular Alexa voice assistant into these earbuds, it’ll take something truly extraordinary to beat Apple. I can’t wait to hear what they’re up to.

Not one but done. If there’s one thing in the Artificial Intelligence development space most people agree on, it’s that AI needs some oversight as unfettered development could lead to disaster. It’s one reason why Google launched an AI Ethics Board a week ago. However, just as important as having the board is making sure that its filled with the right people. Apparently, Google stumbled a bit there. Concerns about one board member in particular for statements having nothing to do with AI led to a devolution and then collapse of the, yes, now-scrapped board. What a tiny tale.

Snapping back. Most people, particularly teens and young adults I speak to have either scaled back on Snapchat use or are at least splitting their time between it and Instagram Stories. Snapchat is no longer taking this user drain lying down. This week the company held a huge press event where it unveiled a host of new technologies, features and initiatives to win back users. These include a new AR Scan platform, putting stories in third-party apps, and a multi-player gaming platform called Snap Games that’ll let you play while snapping with friends.

A reprieve. Tesla CEO Elon Musk lost his Tesla Board Chairmanship over tweets and even after agreeing to have a tweet minder, he still managed to tweet a detail about Tesla production. That tweet angered the SEC enough that they dragged him to court. But instead of further sanctions, the judge told the SEC and Musk to work this out outside of court. If they manage to do that, Musk can probably avoid fresh penalties. Let’s see if this small win makes him more tweet cautious.
