Ahrendts Leaving Apple; Tech-Free SOTU; Tesla Model 3 Price Drop

Check out. Just weeks after giving a lengthy and fascinating interview to the new Vogue Business. Apple’s SVP of Retail Angela Ahrendts (the person in charge of all those amazing Apple Stores) is leaving the company in April. Taking over is 30-year Apple veteran Deirdre O'Brien. Some point to the precipitous decline in iPhone sales (15% in the last quarter) as the reason for Ahrendts’ exit, but perhaps it was the siren’s call of fashion that’s drawing the former Burberry exec out of Apple and to new stylish challenges.

SOTU. I’m not in the habit of covering politics here, but the President’s annual State of the Union speech is an important bellwether of a year of policy decisions. I listened intently to the hour-plus Trump speech for some indication of how his administration would propel Technology and Innovation forward in America. There was none. Trump spent at least 20 minutes on his favorite topic – immigration – aside from a mention of us using American rockets to send astronauts to space, there were zero references to tech. That is unfortunate.

Going Electric. Your next Lyft ride might be quieter than normal. That’s because the ride-sharing service is adding hundreds of all-electric vehicles to its fleet, which means no combustion-engine noise. The program is only rolling out in a couple of cities, but it should expand quickly throughout the year.

The Right Price. When I first drove a Tesla Model 3 in 2017, I was not only excited about the technology, but about the fact that, at $35,000, this sedan would transform the automotive industry. Of course, the car I drove was not the $35,000 model. In fact, that model didn’t exist. It still doesn’t, but Tesla is finally getting closer to that long-ago promised price.

Redo. Ever send a Facebook message and then think, “No! Why did I send that?!” Then you sit there waiting for someone to discover your ill-informed message and unload on you. Now Messenger will let you delete sent messages for up to 10 minutes after you send them. Hello, low-powered time machine.
