Samsung Leak; The Importance of AirPods; Cold Robot; Facebook Wins

Leaky Samsung. We’re still weeks away from Samsung’s official unveiling of its newest flagship phones, the Galaxy S10 and S10+, but a new leak paints a crystal-clear picture of what we could be seeing at the big Unpacked event in San Francisco. As expected, the phones have huge screens that extend virtually edge-to-edge and actually have a perfect little circle cut in them for front-facing cameras. That may or may not be a good idea. (How many on-screen elements will end up hidden behind that dead space?) On the back, we find three (yes, three) cameras. Let’s hope Samsung still has some surprises left up its sleeve for its big event.

Catching air. When Apple first introduced its AirPods wireless earbuds, the reaction was not kind. Even after I positively reviewed them, I found myself defending their existence. That’s all changed now and the AirPods are bigger and, I contend, more important to the Apple than ever.

Tuff bot. While you sit at home worried that a robot’s about to take your job, researchers are scrambling to build bots that can do the jobs you don’t want to, go where you can’t, and, potentially, save your life. Usually, scientists have to build special environments or travel to treacherous terrain to push their robots to the limits. This week, however, the Polar Vortex provided an unexpected windfall for one robot and its keepers. What Cassie the bipedal robot learned in the brutal cold could one day help save your life.

Facebook Surge. It’s been a terrible 18 months for Facebook, what with all the privacy issues, foreign parties manipulating their membership, and just a few days ago it caught tremendous heat for paying teens for access to their data. And yet, the social media giant just posted some truly excellent earnings and usage news. This has sparked a big stock turnaround. However, before you think Facebook’s queuing up to be 2019’s comeback kid, Apple dropped a hammer on its head, removing the company’s internal apps from the App Store and throwing the company into chaos. What a wild ride.

On the other hand, maybe everyone should quit, at least for a little while.
