Sunday Brief - Issue #2

Hey,
Welcome back to Sunday Brief, this is issue 2 of my weekly email newsletter for creative professionals where I share my thoughts, inspiration, life lessons and interesting reads from that week.
This week, as it’s a nice long national holiday here in Cambodia, I’ve been revisiting some of my old side-projects and also checking out some new websites, apps and tools over on Product Hunt.
What I’m thinking about
Over the last year or two there has been a huge surge of new websites and apps. You just need to checkout Product Hunt on a daily basis to see just how much new (and oftentimes highly polished) stuff people are churning out.
But a Tweet I saw recently (yes I’m on Twitter now), that something I’ve been thinking about this week and for the last little while.

؜
Things I wouldn't build in 2020:
- job board
- todo app
- journaling app
- habit/life tracker
- icon/illustration pack
- uptime monitor
- lists of things

(via @Leandro8209)
Now there’s nothing wrong with doing these things in an original or super-niche way in 2020 and no doubt there can be success in that, but it seems most of the stuff I see on Product Hunt these days are just iterations of these things or are more like novelty products.
My favorite things this week
So on the back of this, I thought it would be fitting to share a couple of generally unique and exciting websites, apps and tools I’ve found on Product Hunt and then extract from that a quick list of “Things I Would Build in 2020”.
  • Goodbooks.io - 8,500+ book recommendations from the most successful and interesting people in the world. Even though this is a list of things website, it’s done in such a unique, interesting and value-added way that it works.
  • Notion - The All-In-One workspace that has completely revolutionized the way I work and stay organized. I have a bunch of videos advocating for this tool which you can check out on YouTube.
  • Landbot.io - Used both personally and professionally, Landbot makes it intuitive and easy to make both simple and complex chat bot experiences. The best part is, it’s a no-code tool.
  • Bubble.io - Another no-code tool that has only been growing since I found out about it around 2 years ago. Design, develop, and launch powerful web apps without writing code.
  • Bannerbear - A recent Product Hunt find, this incredible tool allows you to auto-generates social media visuals, e-commerce banners and more.
  • Leave Me Alone - Arguably counter-intuitive 😅but this awesome web-app allows you to unsubscribe from unwanted / automatic emails in one place and unsubscribe.
  • Forest App - A simple, gamified version of the classic pomodoro timer
So these are a few recent website and apps that really grabbed my attention. And from that, I think looking forward to the end of 2020 and into 2021 the things I’m really would love to see built are:
  • Non-distracting productivity and organization tools
  • High quality, non-biased, non distracting news emails and/or apps
  • No-code / low-code development tools
So all in all, my 2020 - 2021 digital product preferences center around three main things - productivity, digital minimalism and reducing the technical barriers to entry for product design and development.
Quote of the week
A basic rule of the good life is as follows: if it doesn’t genuinely contribute something, you can do without it. And that is doubly true for technology. Next time, try switching on your brain instead of reaching for the nearest gadget.
From The Art of the Good Life by Rolf Dobelli. Resurfaced with Readwise.
So that’s it for issue #2 of Sunday Brief. I hope you enjoyed this and it brightened up your inbox ☀️Thanks again for taking the time to read and I hope you have a great week!
