Musings about music…

My first childhood favorite songs included Leaving on a Jet Plane by Peter, Paul, & Mary, and These Boots are Made for Walking by Nancy Sinatra. I loved the songs by the Monkees and The Partridge Family. I also adored the songs from West Side Story and My Fair Lady; I confiscated my parents’ albums to play & sing the songs over and over. I took piano lessons for a few years and love to play, but my playing is mediocre. My singing voice, is fairly good, if limited, and I had a very short singing career as a young adult. I decided my lot was to sing for pleasure, and I still do to this day. Playing and/or singing is a wonderful diversion from writing and editing.
I realized recently that my only record from those performing days is a VHS tape that is over 30 years old. I thought to make a more recent memento for posterity. So I recorded a video of myself playing and singing “Faithfully,” the old Journey song. Why that song? I have a fine sheet music arrangement that sounds like I think it ought to. I posted the video on Facebook. Then I deleted it after reading a few posts about the risks of copyright violation. I could not determine if I was safe to leave it up or not. Does FB and the like have a blanket copyright license like performance venues do? I could not find a definitive answer.
Anyway, if anyone reading this is curious enough to want to see my video. Let me know, and I can share it as a private message on IG or Twitter.

Book Review: The Plot at the Pearson Playhouse
The Plot at the Pearson Playhouse is the 3rd book in the fabulous Katie Porter mystery series by K.T. McGivens, @KMcgivens! I love the complexity of this plotline, focused around a play at an aging playhouse in serious need of repair. See my Goodreads review here:

Book Review: The Clattering by Joan Wendland
The Clattering by Joan Wendland, @BandCgames, is a fun, imaginative tale. I cannot say too much about it because it is a short read, but do check out my Goodreads review:

Book Review: Broken by Ivy Logan
Author Ivy Logan, @Ivyloganauthor, has a gift for creating memorable characters and fascinating storylines. Check out my Goodreads review of Broken, part of her series, The Breach Chronicles:

Spotlight on: Calistoga, CA
On a recent trip to Napa county, my husband, daughter, 2 dogs, and I visited a couple of attractions in the small, picturesque town of Calistoga.
Our first stop was Old Faithful, 1299 Tubbs Lane, a natural geyser that erupts (according to the official website) every 15 to 30 minutes. But when we arrived, we learned that due to the drought, the eruptions happened every 1 ½ to 2 hours! Our timing was off as we had just missed it, but we went in anyway. It is a cute tourist trap with a mini-museum, gift shop, and a few farm animals for whom we purchased food. And, they welcomed dogs, so I was okay with the fact that we did not see the geyser do it’s thing. I mean, we could have stayed, but I had other places to see!
The geyser was being shy when we visited!

We had a nice lunch at Buster’s Southern BBQ, 1207 Foothill Blvd, a dog-friendly casual restaurant with plenty of outdoor seating.

I was most excited to see the Petrified Forest, located at 4100 Petrified Forest road, because it sounded cool and hey, it’s a historical landmark! I imagined it would have miles of trails to explore, but it turned out to have just one ½ mile loop and one additional (½ mile out and back) trail. So I would not call this a hiking destination. Still, it was a fascinating place to see. And yes, dogs are welcome here!
