Let's talk about sleep

I am back! The past two months have been beautifully messy. I like to call it heavenly chaos. I birthed a beautiful baby boy and have been adjusting to having two kids! I have also taken my self-care very seriously. In fact, I have rested and slept more than I ever have in my adult life.
Speaking of sleep- that is what we are talking about over in the Self Care for Busy People Facebook Group. We often view sleep as getting in the way of our work, but as a nonprofit manager said in a recent micro-retreat, “Sleep is the work, too.”
Sleeping and resting isn’t just an obligation or chore. Or the thing that gets in the way of you doing all the things you want. Sleeping and resting is a continuation of the most important work: taking care of YOU. It is just as important as all the other things you have going on. Treating sleep with this kind of reverence is the first step to creating more meaningful sleep rituals in your life.
When thinking about your sleep rituals, remember that it is not just about when you close your eyes. I like to think about my sleep in four parts:
  • Getting ready to wind down: These are activities I do to start to get ready for sleep like closing email; putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, and so on.
  • Preparing to sleep. These are the things you do to help you actually fall asleep. You are usually in bed when you are engaging in these things. Things like aromatherapy, calm music, and journaling
  • Maintaining sleep. This is often overlooked, but it is important to have rituals around staying asleep. This might be putting your phone on “do not disturb”, dimming lights, or journalling if you get up in the middle of night.
  • Waking up. Waking up is a huge part of completing your sleep rituals. Easing out of bed is so much better than rushing. Things like deep breathing, meditation, and stretching are great to do as you gently wake up.
Which part of sleep care are you neglecting? What is one thing you can you do this weekend to improve your self-care practices around sleep?
