Weekly Review - Issue #2

Music from Broods, a game I’ve been waiting 5 years for, a surprising performance from Kristen Stewart, and a shift in thinking about how I organize I code is what’s in today’s issue.

What I've been listening to - Space Island
Space Island LP by Broods
Space Island LP by Broods
I’m a big fan of the New Zealand musical duo, Broods. They’ve been releasing a couple of singles lately and their LP finally came out. It’s been on repeat for the last couple of days. I especially love “Distance and Drugs”, “Like a Woman” and “Gaslight”. Don’t Feed the Pop Monster is still my favorite album from them, but Space Island is a great addition.
What I've been playing - Horizon Forbidden West

Horizon Forbidden West
After 5 years, the sequel to one of my favorite games of all time, Horizon Zero Dawn, came out! I started playing Horizon Forbidden West from day one. After a week of long nights and little sunlight during the weekends, I have completed the main story. Here are some of my thoughts on the game:
  • The game had lots of bugs but nothing game-breaking, I had to restart the game a few times during my play-through
  • The story connects really well to the first game while raising the stakes and allowing the characters to grow (especially Aloy).
  • The side-missions are better written and more meaningful in this game than its predecessor. The rewards for longer missions were worth it and you end up revisiting characters which gave them more depth and made me care more about the world and the people in it.
  • This game did everything I wanted and more. I’ll continue to play the extra content and am happy to report it’s going up there on my list of favorite games of all times.
What I've been watching - Spencer
 Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
Kristen Stewart as Princess Diana
Pablo Larraín’s movie, Spencer, has been getting a lot of Oscar buzz. I had not been a big fan of Kristen Stewart over the years, but this movie was a pleasant surprise. Her performance and the movie’s cinematography are both incredible. This movie is darker and a bit more fantastical than I realized. I highly recommend it and would love to see her win the Oscar for this performance.
Something I've learned - NX monorepos
I’ve been using “monorepos” for years. I put it in quotes because I would consider a monorepo the back-end and front-end of a project in two folders (ex: app / api). But what I didn’t realize is the true power in monorepos comes from putting all your organization’s projects in one repo. The NX team provides a tool for taking that idea and scaling it.
I’ve had multiple side projects, including my blog, all in a separate repo for each project. Now that I’ve established a new brand, Medeski Solutions, I’ll be working to put all my personal projects in one monorepo and begin to start building libraries and utilities to help me do less work and improve my overall workflow. Hopefully, I’ll learn from it and be able to bring it to my day job as well.
Thanks for stopping by. Got any music, game, or movie recommendations for me? Have you used a monorepo repo with multiple projects in one place before? Feel free to respond to this email, I’ll see it.
Until next time, have a great week! 😃

The weekly review is a place to recommend music and movies, as well as what I'm up to as a software developer and indie entrepreneur.
