“Writing is not like painting where you add. It is not what you put on the canvas that the reader sees. Writing is more like a sculpture where you remove, you eliminate in order to make the work visible. Even those pages you remove somehow remain. There is a difference between a book of two hundred pages which is the result of an original eight hundred pages. The six hundred pages are there. Only you don’t see them.”

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World by David Epstein: Dear Class of 2020, You need to read this book. Signed, your dear uncle Yoni. Seriously though if there was one book on career development (and life building) for the pandemic it is this one. How can professionals today even consider a rigid specialization during the dual trends of rapid technological change (i.e. AI) and COVID acceleration?
Granted, ‘niches to riches’ does make sense, and it is probably not a good idea to just jump from one endeavor to another but as a society we have moved into the silo-like thinking of specialization. These days, there is no way to tell if your role or skill will be replaced because of AI or the economic downturn. If I were entering college today, I would get a degree in either philosophy or computer science, the latter is obvious, but philosophy gives you the mental building blocks to deal with change during such a challenging professional period and still thrive. Which is why having the range to embrace so many disciplines is key.
The book sheds light on why having a range of experiences is so important in being excellent at whatever you do. It will take some time for society to embrace more generalized education instead of hyper-focus, but the skills most in need today; empathy, problem solving, relationship management, and digital literacy are applicable to most fields.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Late bloomers are underappreciated: As the saying goes “not all who wander are lost”…
⚪️ The media does not tell the full story: As a society we love the Tiger Woods story about hyper-focus from birth… but at what cost?
⚪️ How much to specialize? This is tough, at some point you are going to have to stick to something for an extended period of time to be decent at it.
