What I'm reading
Israel Is Real: An Obsessive Quest to Understand the Jewish Nation and Its History by Rich Cohen: I’m surprised that I didn’t hear about this book earlier… and only found out about it via the Daily Stoic Podcast. If you follow (or are interested in) Judaism as a philosophy the closest I’ve found the religion acting as an operating system for life was by reading this book by a secular author.
This book is as its title states, a history of the Jewish people. But it’s not one of those twisted and guilt-ridden Phillip Roth style books, but one which seeks to understand why the Jewish people were able to survive (and now thrive) for millennia. The one meta theme is that after the Bar-Kokhba rebellion two thousand years ago Jewish thought turned towards the inner world, as power (then with the Romans) was not attainable in the outer world. Up until that point the one theme the ancient Hebrews practiced was a dogmatic violent insistence on not being under the rule of idol worshiping cultures such as the Greeks. Judaism has had its share of religious zealots who used violence for political purposes. This doesn’t end well as we know how the last 2,000 years turned out for the Jews.
As someone who is seeking the tactical lessons in Judaism’s teachings for today’s world, it is interesting to see how Judaism fared against Roman and Greek religion and philosophy (yes, Stoicism) as well as the upstart religion of the day, Christianity. You can be of any religion to read this book; the writing is excellent and the history covered is relevant for anyone who wants to study the origins of Western thought and civilization.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Contrarian at it’s core: I think it’s weird when people look for the Jew’s ‘secret’ but being persistently contrarian thinkers seems to be a theme.
⚪️ Yeshiva = Inner Citadel: The Stoics had the idea of the Inner Citadel, the Jews that of the Yeshiva, where the religion’s teachings became portable.
⚪️ Competing operating systems: Things could have gone sideways, but so many religions and ancient people are just footnotes now in the annals of history.
