What I'm reading
What I'm reading
A new chapter in the evolution of Yuval Noah Harari’s Sapiens: Ever since the pandemic started, I’ve been thinking about Harari’s work, and how we are living through history. Years from now, when we will look back and remember “the pandemic of 2020”, I’m sure there will be different names for this period, similar to the Antonine plague and the many pandemics that afflicted the ancient world.
I wonder if the Black Death (also known as the Great Mortality, or the Plague) was as political as this pandemic is, though it would be hard to imagine more wide spread conspiracy theories then we’re seeing today. Predict as we’d like, we have no idea whether this occurrence (and I am being optimistic as the media is already reporting on a post-pandemic world) is a once in a hundred-year occurrence or a wakeup call to prepare for worse coronaviruses in the coming years. All that is why taking a pause to reflect on history is so important, because we know what the old adage states on those who don’t learn from history.
The recently released graphic novel version of Sapiens is another format in order to learn how we became the cooperative species we did in order to build our civilizations. Words are just one medium used in order to express ideas, and while written form is my preferred medium as it is in essence timeless, different people consume content in different ways. But the ideas stay the same.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Fractured narratives: Never in history did we have so many different versions of the “Truth”
⚪️ Format for a new generation: Not everyone likes to read, and some people just need a visual format to absorb information
⚪️ The most important skill: If there was one meta-skill us Homo Sapiens continue to hone, its storytelling
