What I'm reading
What I'm reading
How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big by Scott Adams: Not a new book, but even more relevant today, though 10 years is eons in the self-development world. I’ve always been a fan of the Dilbert comic strip (Dogbert…), and this book’s lessons can be applied now, especially with the ease of learning new skills (online), along with the author’s idea of “skill stacking” (stacking two skills together to stand out).
This was a fun book to read, and while I’m not sold on every idea in it (such as building systems versus setting goals, as goals are ultimately needed for success), there are many insights in this book taken from the author’s experiences. Goals can be binary and not fulfilling when reached, but are part of our DNA. With all that we know today about goals, we understand they are the #1 driver of human behavior when looking to accomplish anything. With that though, we need to immerse ourselves in the process, and what ultimately leads to successful outcomes is, as the Aristotle quote states, our habits… “We Are What We Repeatedly Do. Excellence Then, Is Not An Act But A Habit.” This book was probably written for a college grad in mind, but it’s relevant for anyone at any stage of their career. And something to consider is that happiness comes from the process of taking action and moreover, overcoming obstacles, and failure is part of that process.
I think this is what makes people the happiest, overcoming obstacles in pursuit of a worthwhile goal they hold dear. That as opposed to what society tells us about happiness being a result of acquiring material possessions, or being slightly “better” than our peer group (and posting about it online). As a result people stay in situations which are not great for them because they’re afraid of failure, so this book is as timely as ever, especially when we have so many opportunities to break free.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Best to embrace failure: It’s going to happen either way, best to at least learn from it.
⚪️ Take yourself less seriously: He may be a cartoonist, but we can learn about how to deal with setbacks from his attitude.
⚪️ “Skill stacking” today: The ability to speak publicly and write well are meta-skills which can be stacked upon other skills to truly standout.
