Welcome back YKC community … here back in Israel on the eve of Yom HaZikaron. A reflective time, even during pandemic times… and wishing a meaningful Yom Haatzmaut to everyone in Israel.
I’m vaccinated, free of bidud, and would love to meet in person and catch-up this month in the Tel Aviv area. Additionally, if you’re a growing Israeli startup and looking to hire high-skilled workers in the US let’s chat about how I can help you find that talent in Tulsa. To schedule a time to meet please respond directly to this email.
Be on the lookout for news items I’m posting regularly on LinkedIn; I would love your comments. You can also follow my daily adventures in the Startup Nation on LinkedIn. To connect with me directly click here.
I will be hosting the next Upstream Israel Mixer Thursday April 22nd 12pm EST/7pm Israel time. They’re a lot of fun, you’ll hear a speaker, and meet a number of good people all under half an hour. To join the mixer, click here.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
$1 billion investment in Israeli high-tech in a single day this April (ISRAEL21c): It’s been forever since I’ve been in Israel for Yom HaZikaron and Yom Haaztamut. This used to be a reflective and important time for me years ago at Dor Chadash, at a memorial turned celebration. New York pre-pandemic and what feels like a different era. Reflecting on it, today, my way of channeling that energy digitally is through my LinkedIn newsletter The Israeli Startup Review (you should subscribe 😊).
Israel went from being praised for military to technology prowess, and while they are interconnected, it’s no longer where your hilltop is located or the infantry huffing alongside armor which wins wars. But I do think often of the character of the early Zionists, the stubborn, contrarian thinking of if-everyone-thought-that-way-nothing-would-get-done. And I see those traits in many founders, that same unreasonable determination, grit, and focus. This doesn’t always have to come from somewhere positive (Israel’s early founders were running away from something as much as they were running towards a goal). But even negative experiences act as fodder to continue to keep the fire alive.
So, on this Israeli Memorial Day we can reflect on the lives lost defending what was created and look to celebrate everything that was built and is still being built. Raising money, and breaking another financial record are just another example of how far we’ve come, and how Israel has succeeded in reaching a level of normalcy when it is being praised for something as normal as business success.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ True grit: While not as hard as previous generations (nor should they be) the country’s citizens are ultimately resilient.
⚪️ It’s not over yet: Despite the quiet of the past few years, Israel still faces many security challenges.
⚪️ We’re only getting started: This is what it feels like to take part in an endeavor on the accent.
