Welcome back YKC community … Shalom from Israel and a Shana Tova V’Metuka to those celebrating. I’m spending the two-week mandatory quarantine period in a small moshav in the lower Galilee. Only a few more days to go until I join the rest of the country in a general lock-down; out of the frying pan, into the fire!

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Emiratis are ‘enthusiastic’ about peace with Israel, senior UAE official says by Raphael Ahren: Though I am too young to remember it vividly, the time we are living through may be similar to the “end of history” when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down in the early 1990’s. That occurrence could also serve as a warning against any euphoria, as that was quickly dashed by the realities of the day. The Middle East being what it is, something is going to blow up and rain on the parade. How far we are from Thomas Friedman’s bible of Middle East history From Beirut to Jerusalem, but yet how close.
Why did this… peace, and I’ll call it that, happen? I call it peace because peace occurs on the level of human interaction, and not just on paper in deals that governments broker. It depends on who you talk to, or what you read in the media about backdoor diplomacy, defense considerations, tech transfer, etc., but does it really matter? For the first time you have Arab nations that are not only normalizing relationships with Israel, but enthusiastic about it. It’s seriously like that quote about “success having many fathers…”, people are coming out of the woodwork to take credit for the recent events.
I tend to look for the good in bad situations (or least the lessons) but it seems as if COVID and general ecological erosion played a part in this. The pandemic will probably continue to shape the globe in ways we can’t even imagine yet. But once the excitement ends, both countries (and business people) will have to do the arduous work of developing long-term authentic relationships.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ "If now, when?”: If you’re going to normalize relations, a pandemic is a good a time as any.
⚪️ Relationships take time: For all the deals being inked, and though eager, we need to give it time for the big deals to happen.
⚪️ Normalization feels normal: Normalization is almost a non-issue; this is how far we’ve come… I didn’t think I’d see this in my lifetime.
