Welcome back YKC community … thank you to all who attended last week’s Israeli Tech Happy Hour. It was a full house, with over 200 attendees; all networking, smiling, and creating new connections.
A big thank you to ecosystem partner and our sponsor Smith, Gambrell & Russell, LPP for their support of the event (and amazing raffle prize).
I am gauging interest for the next happy hour in Q2 and put together a Facebook event here; if you’re interested in attending please click “Going”.
Next month I’m partnering with my friend and Austin tech/CPG ecosystem influencer Marc Nathan for the Super Connector Meetup at SXSW Monday March 16th. If you’re a brand or service provider looking to develop relationships with some of the most well-connected people/influencers in tech attending SXSW Interactive please respond here for sponsorship opportunities. Venues/activations in Austin for the festival are at capacity but there are a few sponsorship opportunities I can assist with as well.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
What It Takes: Lessons in the Pursuit of Excellence by Stephen A. Schwarzman: While this book started off a bit slow it did gain momentum and ultimately was a solid read. It’s easy to believe when we see some entrepreneurs’ success (especially on social, and particularly tech) that success is some overnight phenomenon, when often it can take years of building, that is beset by multiple setbacks.
What I thought was the most interesting part of the book was the author’s experience in dealing with the Chinese government regarding philanthropic and trade topics. Today, as we’re still trying to figure out the scope of the coronovirus these chapters did provide some context, but it’s still unclear how much of an impact the virus will have on US-China trade relations.
The author wasn’t brash about it, but he had a healthy dose of chutzpah which helped him reach the level of financial success he has had. As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve found the personal stories in biographies much more beneficial then the trove of self-development/business books out there these days.
⚪️ No straight line to success: It’s worth repeating, but the journey many take to get to the destination can go sideways.
⚪️ One pivotal moment: Like Bob Iger’s experience at ABC during the 1988 Winter Olympics, one pivotal moment early in a career (in Schwarzman’s case, helping sell Tropicana) set his future trajectory.
⚪️ In some industries, education is still key: Education (and the prestige of the educational institution) are probably going to stay relevant in fields like finance, not everything is like tech.
