Courage Is Calling: Fortune Favors the Brave by Ryan Holiday: This Halloween edition of the newsletter is not just dedicated to fear, but finding the courage to face fear in the many forms it takes. I for one am a firm believer in doing something scary every day; better to know then suffer from the much worse feeling of regret (regardless of the outcome). Fear causes us to live an unfulfilled life of regret, of not knowing, not trying, just because of some imagined threat. It is, as quoted in an earlier chapter in the book: כל העולם כולו גשר צר מאוד והעיקר לא לפחד כלל (The World Is a Narrow Bridge and The Important Thing Is to Not Be Afraid).
Ryan Holiday is one of my favorite writers, and resembles the closest thing to being a modern day (Millennial) philosopher. This is another excellent book, the first in the series of the four Stoic virtues. But it’s not just the Stoics who looked to find ways to face this baseline human emotion in order to live the Good Life. Fear has always served a purpose, and how from an evolutionary perspective we’ve been able to survive. But certain fears, like what people will think and say (you can’t control that either way), no longer serve us when we’re looking to accomplish our goals. Dealing with that gut fear that is part of our reptile brain takes a lot of work; as much as I seek challenges, I am also human and don’t always step up and face the fear when confronted with this intense emotion.
As this book covers, we need to meditate on the idea of fear, and know that courage is not about not being afraid, that is impossible. What is possible, and where courage is created is facing the fear head-on by confronting that fear. You’ll see it’s not as bad as you imagined.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Feel the fear, and do it anyhow: There is way around it, you must go into what scares you the most.
⚪️ Our ancestors dealt with fear better: Though the stakes were higher (they didn’t have a smartphone to distract them when that emotion came up).
⚪️ Times were scarier back then: Our ancestors didn’t have the knowledge of the world that we do, which makes their courage even more impressive.
