Welcome back YKC community … to YKC and the middle of the summer. It’s midsummer so light on the events (both IRL and online).
This was a fun article to write, my writing has progressed from featuring startups to sharing professional’s stories, and highlighting actionable takeaways readers could benefit from.

Life Doesn’t Happen to You, It Happens for You: I was riffing off this idea of cognitive reframing in a personal reflection I’m writing in Medium, and how ever since the start of the pandemic I’ve seen so many people crash emotionally, while others rose to the occasion. The pandemic (you could substitute an economic downturn, or other society changing event) put additional intense pressure on people, and while we’ve learned to live with COVID, there are lessons to be learned from this time.
I can state that when you’re going through the challenges of dealing with a parent’s illness, and all the unnecessary BS which goes along with it, you need to create space to be self-reflective. But in the back of your mind, you know this experience changes you, and that you really have two choices: To let the sadness, anger, and frustration bury you, and impact your worldview permanently as a jaded person…. or to use those emotions as rocket fuel to transform and become your best self. When I get my tattoo, it will be some variation of this quote, which is a take on Nietzsche’s Amor Fati and will remind me that often we don’t see the bigger picture when times are tough. We so often feel like life is tossing us around like some ship on the open seas, but in fact life is testing us by putting challenges in our way. We either pass or fail… and the outcome determines how ready we are for our next level up in life.
Yes, this is an idea popularized by Tony Robbins, he is still one of my favorite “gurus”, and the OG of self-development content. But this concept is so simple, and anyone reading this newsletter can summon the inner strength to face whatever challenge they may be going through… and not just face it, but understand that there are lessons to extract from the experience.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ You’re being tested: Every day is a test, and while not usually life or death, we are still constantly being challenged.
⚪️ You need to go though a pain period: We can’t appreciate life’s sweetness if we don’t experience it’s bitterness.
⚪️ How could one possibly see the bigger picture: There is so much beyond our understanding.
