Welcome back YKC community … for those in the US, I hope you had a meaningful MDW. Maybe I’m an optimist but I feel we’re starting to see the light at the end of the tunnel in the US… though sadly I cannot say the same for places in the Southern Hemisphere. My latest piece in ISRAEL21c: Why are 4 US states building bridges to Israeli tech?
I believe we’ll see a new wave of startups in the coming months and as such I will be actively featuring interesting startups (with a focus on COVID-19 solutions) below so reach out to me directly to see if your company is a good fit to be featured.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
How much Instagram influencers stand to lose because of the pandemic: Maybe it’s passe but I’ve become nostalgic (remember back in the day when we could sit in a Starbucks?) and thought about life pre-social media. Aside from reading books listening to pop music of by-gone eras (such as the 1990’s) makes me reflect on how much things have changed.
Being authentic or real used to be a badge of honor. When was the last time someone used the term “poseur”, if you’re under 25 years of age and reading this you may have no idea what I’m talking about? Today it’s a given what is posted on image driven platforms like IG and TikTok is not real, that the scene is highly manufactured and portray the poster’s peak experience. Which is why it’s been shocking for people to see celebrities and other influencers without makeup stuck at home and partaking in activities which are less engaging.
I believe we’ll see social change in a way it hasn’t since the Great Recession over ten years ago. We’re already seeing this with Facebook’s new foray into e-commerce and the tech giants’ attempt to usurp Zoom’s engagement; a tool which is 300 million users strong and growing. After the chaos of COVID-19 the generation going through this may become more reflective and look to find ways to share their lives in an authentic way on a digital platform which hasn’t been built yet.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Authenticity is not a business strategy: But it could be a good sales and marketing strategy as social will develop.
⚪️ WeChat is probably a good example: After Libra Zuck and Co. are not giving up on Facebook’s attempt to enter financial services… the Empire will Strike Back at some point.
⚪️ Platforms on top of platforms: Instead of competing against Amazon’s marketplace, e-commerce website builders like Shopify are using Facebook’s social for search and discovery of their brands.
