Welcome back {{first_name}} …
If you’re looking for tactical advice on how to improve your digital content marketing (especially if you’re a SMB or non-profit) check out my short videos on LinkedIn. IMHO LinkedIn is going to become an increasingly stronger content platform; it went from being a transactional platform to one which actually provides value through it’s content. We’ll see where my experiment with LinkedIn video and LinkedIn Live goes…
Mini-Challenge: Make ‘no’ your default answer for a day. If there is one way to lose focus it’s death by a thousands 'yeses’. Small asks and favors will add up, compound, and steal your precious time; those seconds quickly add up to minutes > hours > days, etc. and you wonder why you’re not accomplishing what you want. Try it for a day, and while it might be slightly uncomfortable to violate social niceties and say 'no’, your time , sanity, and goals are more important. Let me know how it went by responding directly to this email.

What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Trillion Dollar Coach: The Leadership Playbook of Silicon Valley’s Bill Campbell by Eric Schmidt , Jonathan Rosenberg, and Alan Eagle: I really wanted to love this book as a playbook for performance. It was one of my most anticipated books this year so far… but a playbook for how to improve performance it is not. It’s a testament to Bill Campbell, the coach whose imprint is felt in many of the most significant (trillion dollar) tech companies today.
I’ve always been fascinated by the connection between professional sports and the military and how they translate to the work we do. Coaching however is a personal experience, and as someone who believes that we need someone to call us on our BS and works with a business coach I’m happy this book is further evangelizing this practice. Our business relationships can seem sometimes transactional, and where Bill Campbell excelled was by bringing his real self to business environments.
This is a good book to read if you want some inner baseball on Silicon Valley and the authors (particularly Eric Schmidt) show vulnerability that isn’t typical in a place like the valley.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Everyone needs a coach: Seriously, if just to make sure your ego doesn’t get the best of you. If there is one way to improve anything in life it’s to get a coach, just be careful who you let into your mind as it’s a powerful role.
⚪️ Candor is underrated today: That statement is an understatement in it’s own right. I know it’s probably not popular these days to be candid because of fear of offending someone, but the reality is that we crave the truth (as long as we know the person has our best interest in mind).
⚪️ One needs to learn how to coach: Bill Campbell’s record as Columbia’s football coach was not great, but he was able to transition to the then emerging tech world at Apple in the 1980’s and quickly prove himself as a superstar. It was through these difficult experiences and transition periods that he was able to develop his skill as a trillion dollar coach.
