What I'm reading
What I'm reading
Jack Welch: 6 Principles of Leadership: I don’t usually like listicles on leadership, but given Jack Welch’s recent passing I thought it would be an appropriate topic to cover. I’m a fan of sport/business performance mindsets so there is something timeless about this list.
Going over Jack Welch’s life and leadership style made me reflect… while some principles have stayed the same, many have changed. A principle such as “being candid” could be known today as “radical honesty”, though I guess the current idea of “radical vulnerability” would probably have gotten you shown the door back in GE’s heyday.
The underlying thing, and what I think strong leaders instinctively understand, is that they must be the change catalyst. It’s on them to make those (many times unpopular) changes for an organization to survive and thrive. There is always change in a competitive business environment, but today with the pace of tech, Welch’s wisdom of “changing before you have to” rings so much truer.
Key Principles:
⚪️ Face reality as it is; not as it was or as you wish it were: Unless you’re Elon or Steve Jobs and can bend reality to your will, many millennials would be wise to heed this advice.
⚪️ Don’t manage, lead: This lesson reminds me of how I saw leadership displayed in the IDF; if you want to be an effective commander and lead the troops, be out in the front.
⚪️ If you don’t have a competitive advantage, don’t compete: I literally see this every day, so many founders I meet can’t articulate their competitive advantage and the real problems they’re trying to solve.
