What I'm reading
Hanukkah today would make the Maccabees roll over in their graves: From an American perspective it makes sense what Hanukkah is today as the festivities around Christmas have their allure. Jewish holidays and fasts usually remind us of untold suffering millennia ago, which is why it’s surprising this holiday’s original meaning has been watered down. Today however, the focus on the oil burning in the ashes of the fallen Temple does send a powerful message of resilience in modern times.
Let’s not get confused though, the Maccabees, the protagonists in the Hanukkah story were religious extremists who preached a strict adherence to their interpretation of Judaism. Of course, history paints the story in the eyes of the winners, but even by the standards of the time, where people were far from enlightened, the Maccabees were portrayed as brutal. Their fight wasn’t just against their Greek rulers, but also against Jews who assimilated into Hellenistic culture. I know it’s not popular to state, but Hellenistic thought certainly had an impression on Jewish theology (as it did on every tribe in the region), and is a building block of Western philosophy and thought.
But it’s like the George Bernard Shaw quote about the unreasonable man who moves the needle, as there are lessons to be learned from the Maccabees violent upending of the status quo at the time. It’s a bit bitter and it reminds us how current events can lead to negative consequences by a few (well-organized) zealots with a strong vision. It’s just that in this case, we were on the side of those fighting the established order.
Key Takeaways:
⚪️ Win the battle, lose the war: The kingdom the Maccabees built was eventually taken apart when Herod came to town.
⚪️ The original renewable energy story: Who knew that this oil would burn so clean and for so long.
⚪️ This story needs more unpacking: One of history’s sagas which needs to be explored further.
